"Brown ale is a specialty of the North of England, and a very early beer style — it is mentioned in literature in the 16th century. Judicious amounts of dark malt give brown ales brilliant dark-amber color and deep flavors that stop short of roastiness. The walnut or hazelnut notes in Nut Brown Ale come from dark malts and from fermentation in Yorkshire Squares — no nuts are used in the recipe! Dry, medium-bodied; the Sam Smith ale yeast strain gives a fruity note to the finish. Serve with Stilton cheese, grouse and roasted game hen, barbecued duck, pepper steak; spicy food, paella, stir-fry, teriyaki, Thai food, Chinese food, creamy chicken and pineapple curry. Serve at 50-55 °F." —importer
"Appearance: Deep reddish brown chestnut in colour with a caked-on lace.
"Smell: Nutty aroma...a mix of sweet and grain with a hint of butterscotch.
"Taste: Smooth with a creamy textured mouth feel coming from the medium body. Sweet up front then leaning more towards dryish nutty finish. There is an underlying buttery flavour from the Yorkshire yeast and a sufficing hop bitterness that seem to do a good job of putting the missing pieces together for this brew.
"Notes: Truly one of the best brown ales in the world...this is the cast and mold for lots of brewers trying to come up with a nut-brown ale. The lasting nutty finish leaves a pleasing hazelnut or walnut aftertaste." —Jason Alström, BeerAdvocate
"A rich, reddish-brown color with a frothy tan head that lingers, this is a classic selection that illustrates how delicious balance and restraint can be. It’s a traditional English brown ale, very elegant and nuanced, offering subtle aromas and flavors of caramel malt, brown bread, dried red fruits like raisin and date and a veritable mélange of nutty notes, particularly hazelnut and walnut shells. The texture is creamy and mouthfilling, but the finish is balanced by a hint of earthy hop bitterness, ending dry and clean." —Lauren Buzzeo,

"Copper brown color. Aromas and flavors of bread crust, dried fruits and chocolate covered nuts with a crisp, dryish medium body and a lively peppery, citrusy, and earthy hop and melon finish. A delicious spot on English brown ale." —Beverage Testing Institute (92 points)
