Lagavulin

Nestled on the rugged shores of Islay, Lagavulin Distillery has been producing its unmistakably bold and smoky whisky for over two centuries. The island’s windswept landscape and maritime climate shape the character of this deeply peated single malt, which has become synonymous with Islay whisky. Though distillation in the area dates back to at least 1742, Lagavulin as a legal entity emerged in 1816 when John Johnston established the first licensed distillery. Over the years, it evolved under the stewardship of figures like Peter Mackie, whose relentless pursuit of quality cemented Lagavulin’s place among Scotland’s most revered single malts.  

Mackie’s influence, beginning in the late 19th century, steered Lagavulin toward its signature depth and complexity. His commitment to craftsmanship and innovation set the foundation for the whisky’s enduring reputation. Today, Lagavulin remains a benchmark for Islay malts, its slow distillation process and long maturation yielding a whisky known for its rich, smoky intensity and maritime character.
