La Rioja Alta

Founded in 1890 in Haro’s historic Station District, La Rioja Alta, S.A. has built a legacy of winemaking that spans three centuries. Established by five Riojan and Basque families, the winery was guided from the start by forward-thinking leadership, including its first president, Doña Saturnina García Cid y Gárate. With early influences from French winemaker Monsieur Vigier, the house introduced its first Reserva 1890, a wine that laid the foundation for what would become Gran Reserva 890. The winery grew significantly in 1904 with the merger proposed by Don Alfredo Ardanza, leading to the creation of Gran Reserva 904. Over the decades, La Rioja Alta, S.A. expanded its reach, acquiring Torre de Oña in Rioja Alavesa, establishing Lagar de Cervera in Galicia, and developing Áster in Ribera del Duero, all while maintaining an unwavering commitment to quality and tradition.

Innovation and excellence have remained central to La Rioja Alta, earning international recognition for its wines, including Viña Ardanza, Viña Alberdi, and the highly esteemed Gran Reserva selections. The winery has embraced modern winemaking advancements while honoring time-honored methods, evident in milestones such as the construction of a cutting-edge cellar in Labastida in 1996 and the launch of the pioneering Club de Cosecheros. Over the years, its wines have received global accolades, including high placements in Wine Spectator’s top rankings and the title of “Best Red Wine in the World” from Top Merchant. Today, La Rioja Alta continues to uphold its legacy of excellence, crafting wines that reflect the depth of its heritage and the evolution of its craft.
