Ruby-red. Straightforward red berry aromas are complemented by smoky herbs and mocha, with a brighter mineral quality building with air. Firm raspberry and cherry flavors possess good tannic spine and linger impressively on the juicy finish. This gained weight in the glass but maintained focus.
The 2004 Masia Carreras is 50% Garnacha, 35% Carinena, and the balance Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah. The wine was aged in French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered. Opaque and brooding, it reveals notes of crushed stone, wood smoke, leather, red cherry, and black raspberry. On the palate the wine is slightly compact but 2-3 years of additional cellaring should round it out.- Jay Miller - 90 points.
