Tomas Cusine Costers del Segre is quite small in relation to other,
more “known”, Spanish appellations. Historically, there were many more hectares under vine, but much of these plantings were ripped out after time to make way for other crops, most notably olives and almonds. However, a case should be made that, much like France’s Provence, the warm and arid climate is just as ideal for vines as Tomas Cuisine believed when he started making wine in 1982. The wines here tend to be more spice driven with high fruit concentration and often a “sauvage” character to them that is quite appealing and delicious. And they remain amazingly inexpensive! 50% Tempranillo, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Garnacha, 8% Merlot. Opaque ruby. Cassis, violet and cured meat on the nose, with slow-building oak spices. Licorice and mineral notes gain strength with air and carry onto the palate, adding complexity to the sweet cherry and blackcurrant flavors. Finishes with good grip and lingering dark berry notes. This is drinking very well right now.By Josh Raynolds
